How it plays

The city is the board

The Fourth Face is played on foot, in the real streets of Minsk's Upper Town and Trinity Suburb. Walk to ten real places, from the doors of the Kupala Theatre to the riverside, and the case opens as you arrive.

  1. 01

    Walk there

Follow the case across the map of the centre. Arriving is what opens a place: people to question, papers to read, and things that can only be seen by standing there.

  2. 02

    Work the case

Question the people involved, look closely at what they hand you, and work the open questions in your notebook as the evidence comes in.

  3. 03

    Put your name to it

Nobody tells you whether you're right. What you uncover, whom you believe and what you finally sign decide which of 28 endings is yours.

A case, not a quiz

You decide what you believe

Question and press

Question the people involved, show them what you have found, and press them when their story doesn't hold.

Read closely

Letters, ledgers, receipts and a diary page. Look for a watermark, a signature, a pencil note in the margin — and take a document to a handwriting expert, choosing what to compare it with.

Keep your own file

A dossier on everyone, a timeline you build yourself, and notes in the margins. Work the questions in your notebook; nobody marks your answers.

History that checks out

Real history, fiction in the gaps

  • June 1890
  • The Kupala Theatre
  • Słuck sashes
  • The 1911 city plan

The story reaches back to June 1890, the opening of the city theatre that is now the Kupala Theatre, and to the Słuck sashes, whose faces carried different colours for feasts and for mourning. The real history is marked as such. Everything else is fiction written into the gaps of the record, and you can lay a 1911 city plan over today's map.

Your choices, your ending

Twenty-eight endings, shaped by what you uncover, whom you believe and what you finally put your name to. A second walk can end very differently.

English and Russian

Switch languages at any time, even mid-case. Walk it alone or with a second player beside you.

Pause whenever you like

About two hours and about 4.2 km in all, at your own pace. Stop when you need to; your evidence stays with you.
